Conservation Status
California bighorn sheep (O. c. californicus) are considered endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The subspecies, O. c. auduboni of the Black Hills in South Dakota has recently believed to be extinct after a die-off from pneumonia.
Fun Fact
When fighting for dominance or mating rights, males can hurl themselves at each other up to 20 mph. The impact of the clashing horns can be heard echoing throughout the mountains for hours until one finally backs out.
